"I am writing this testimonial on behalf of Mr. Alan Basist, who I have known personally and professionally over the past fifteen years. Our relationship began at NOAA at a time when the first in a new series of advanced microwave imagers was launched by the Department of Defense in 1987. These instruments, called Special Sensor Microwave Imagers (SSM/I), have the unique ability to observe the Earths surface under nearly all weather conditions. As a physicist, I understood the physical principals underlying the SSM/I measurements but needed someone to share my enthusiasm and help me in the interpretation and development of operational products. For the next ten years, Alan and I worked continuously on the development of the first operational products of surface temperature, surface wetness and snow cover using microwave measurements. As a testimony to his efforts, these parameters were generated routinely and still published in NOAA’s Monthly Climate Bulletin. Alan was not only instrumental in the development of these products; he also worked closely with a wide variety of users within NOAA as well as other organizations showing them the uniqueness of these products.
